  125. Congratulations on your purchase of the sound card!  This sound card will 
  126. enable you to explore the exciting world of multimedia on your PC.
  127. Your sound card is a state-of-the-art 16 bit stereo sound card capable of 
  128. playing back, recording and compressing audio data from a variety of 
  129. sources. It is equipped with all the features you need to enjoy today's and 
  130. tomorrow's demanding multimedia applications. DOS games compatibility 
  131. is ensured through Adlib, Sound Blaster, Sound Blaster Pro and Windows 
  132. Sound System support.

  134. This manual will give you all the information you need to get your sound 
  135. card up and running as quickly as possible. After this Introduction, we will 
  136. first take a look at the contents of the package contents in chapter 1: 
  137. Unpacking the  sound card and check if all necessary accessories have 
  138. been included.

  140. After that, in the chapter Hardware Installation, we will take a look at the 
  141. installation procedure of your  sound card.  The next part, Software 
  142. Installation, describes how to quickly and correctly install all the 
  143. necessary drivers in order to make your sound card run under your operating 
  144. system.

  146. For those of you who would like to know more precise technical details of 
  147. your sound card, please refer to the Technical specifications section of 
  148. this manual (see addendum C).  Please refer to the Troubleshooting section 
  149. if there are any problems during or after installation.

  152. sound card which cannot be solved with the help of this manual then do not

  158. CHAPTER 1       UNPACKING THE SOUND CARD

  160. After unpacking your sound card, please check if the following items were 
  161. included in the package:

  173. Chapter 2       Hardware Installation

  176. 2-1 Installation Requirements
  177.  
  178. This section will give you instructions on how to successfully install your 
  179. sound card into your PC system. Before you install the sound card, please 
  180. check the following minimum hardware requirements of your PC:
  181.  
  182. Minimum Requirements for Using the  Sound Card:
  183.  
  184. * IBM PC/AT or compatible PC (486 or higher recommended)
  185. * 2 MB RAM (4 MB or more recommended)
  186. * A free 16-bit ISA expansion slot for installing the sound card
  187. * Approximately 4 MB of free hard disk space for installation files and 
  188.   Windows applications
  189. * EGA display adapter (VGA or better recommended)
  190. * Microsoft Windows 3.1 or later (for Windows applications)
  191. * DOS 3.3 or later
  192.  
  193. If your PC system meets these minimum requirements please continue to 
  194. read the installation instructions. If not, please refer to your supplier 
  195. for information on how to update your PC for use with your sound card.
  196.  
  197. Before installing your sound card, make sure the installation site has been 
  198. shielded from static electricity. High voltages caused by static electricity 
  199. could permanently damage components on your sound card and other parts 
  200. of your PC system and will void your warranty!

  204. 2-2     Hardware Configuring

  207. 2-2.1 General Overview
  208.  
  209. We will now take a look at the connector layout of your sound card.  Please 
  210. refer to your card for the exact locations of the various connectors.

  213. 2-2.2 CD-ROM Interface Connector (J9)
  214.  
  215. You can connect your ATAPI (IDE) CD-ROM drive's data-cable to this 
  216. connector. Make sure the orientation of the cable is correct, so that the red 
  217. edge of the flat cable corresponds with the '1'-pin of the interface 
  218. connector.
  219.  
  220. Use this CD-ROM interface only if your PC system's IDE interface does not 
  221. supply enough connections for your configuration (see Addendum B for 
  222. more detailed information).
  223.  
  224. When you do use this interface, don't forget to enable and configure the 
  225. interface during the driver installation procedure (see also chapter 3 
  226. 'Software Installation').

  229. 2-2.3 CD-ROM Audio Input Connectors (J4,5,6)
  230.  
  231. Depending on what type of audio-cable your CD-ROM drive has been 
  232. supplied with, you can connect the audio output of your drive to any of 
  233. these three connectors. Refer to your card for determining the right connector 
  234. to use with your CD-ROM drive.

  243. If the case of your PC system is equipped with volume control push buttons, 
  244. you can make the cable connections for these buttons according to the pin 
  245. description of figure 4.

  249. 2-2.5   External Wavetable Connector (J8)

  251. An external WaveBlasterTM compatible wavetable can be connected to 
  252. your  sound card through connector J8.

  254. During installation of your external wavetable make sure that all pins of 
  255. connector J5 are connected to the wavetable card's socket.

  259. 2-2.6   Modem Interface (J7)
  260.  
  261. A simple direct connection between the sound card and the modem can be 
  262. made by connecting to J7, thus enabling the use of speakerphone 
  263. applications through the connection of the sound card's microphone input 
  264. and speaker output to the appropriate connections on the modem. Consult 
  265. fig. 2 for more detailed information on the pin assignment of this connector.

  269. 2-3 Card Installation
  270.  
  271. After checking the various connections we can now start to install the card 
  272. into your PC system.  Please follow the guidelines below.
  273.  
  274. 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of your computer.
  275.  
  276. 2. Remove the cover from the PC system.
  277.  
  278. 3. Locate a free 16-bit ISA expansion slot.
  279.  
  280. 4. Remove the slot cover screw and slot cover.
  281.  
  282. 5. Connect the necessary cables to your sound card, such as the CD-ROM 
  283.    interface and audio cables and the front panel volume control cables as 
  284.    described in section 2-2 of this chapter.
  285.  
  286. 6. Position the sound card over the free ISA expansion slot and gently 
  287.    push the card into the slot.
  288.  
  289. 7. Check if the card has been properly inserted.
  290.  
  291. 8. Re-insert the slot cover screw.
  292.  
  293. 9. Close the PC housing and re-attach the power cable.

  299. Now that you have successfully installed your sound card into your PC 
  300. system, let us take a  look at the outside connections of your sound card.

  305. Chapter 3       Software Installation
  306.  
  307. This section will provide instructions on how to successfully install the 
  308. driver and application software for your sound card on your PC system.
  309.

  311. 3-1     Installation under DOS
  312.

  314. 3-1.1   Driver Installation
  315.  
  316. N.B. Run this DOS setup program only when you don't want to install the 
  317. sound card's driver under your Windows environment !    If you do want to 
  318. install the sound card's drivers for use under both Windows and DOS then 
  319. refer to section 3-2 for installation of the drivers.
  320.  
  321. To use your sound card under DOS, first insert the  installation disk that 
  322. contains the DOSSETUP directory into your floppy disk drive. Assuming 
  323. your floppy disk drive is drive A:, then type the following:
  324.  
  325.     A: (+ ENTER)
  326.     CD\DOSSETUP (+ ENTER)
  327.     INSTALL (+ ENTER)
  328.  
  329. The  DOS driver installation program will now start up.
  330.  
  331. The program will ask you to make a selection of a series of different 
  332. configuration settings.
  333.  
  334. The most commonly used values for the sound card are as follows:
  335.  
  336.     Sound card I/O address: 220H
  337.     Sound card IRQ channel: 5
  338.     Sound card DMA channel: 1
  339.     MPU-401 (Wavetable, when available) I/O address: 330H no IRQ
  340.     CD-ROM interface: Disabled
  341.     Game/MIDI port interface: Enabled
  342.  
  343. After making your selection, the program will show all values once more and 
  344. will ask you whether the entered values are correct. If they are correct type 
  345. 'Y' for confirmation. If not, type 'N' and re-enter the correct values. After 
  346. confirmation, the setup program will create a directory on your hard disk 
  347. (C:\AUDIODRV) in which the initialisation files will be placed. After that 
  348. your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files will be updated. After a 
  349. system's reboot your sound card will be initialised and is ready to be used.
  350.  
  351. If your application/game software uses any other sound card configuration 
  352. values than the ones that are used by your sound card, you can change the 
  353. values by doing the following.
  354.  
  355. When in the DOS prompt (C:\), type:
  356.  
  357.     CD\AUDIODRV     (+ ENTER)
  358.     ESSCFG  (+ ENTER)
  359.  
  360. You can now change any configuration value. After exiting this program 
  361. and rebooting your system, the new values will take effect.
  362.  
  363. When selecting a sound card option during the installation of your game or 
  364. application software it is recommended to choose (in order of preference) 
  365. Sound Blaster Pro, Sound Blaster (or compatible) or Adlib, if applicable. 
  366. These settings are mostly used for sound effects.
  367.  
  368. If your game or application software has a selection procedure for music 
  369. support (MIDI), you can choose Sound Blaster (Pro) MIDI or, when your 
  370. sound card has been equipped with a Wavetable (1855/1859 standard, 
  371. other models optional external) you can choose MPU-401 or General MIDI 
  372. compatibility.

  376. 3-1.2   DOS 3D Sound Settings
  377.  
  378. If your sound card is equipped with a 3D sound effect generator, you can 
  379. enable this function by running the 3D utility program 3DDOS.EXE. Insert 
  380. the disk that contains the 3D utilities for your  sound card into your floppy 
  381. disk drive and type the following :
  382.  
  383.     COPY A:\3D\3DDOS.EXE C:\AUDIODRV        (+ ENTER)
  384.     COPY A:\3D\ESSCTL.DLL C:\AUDIODRV       (+ ENTER)
  385.  
  386. Then go to the C:\AUDIODRV directory by typing:
  387.  
  388.     C:      (+ ENTER)
  389.     CD\AUDIODRV     (+ ENTER)
  390.  
  391. After that you can manipulate the 3D settings by typing the following:
  392.  
  393.     3DDOS /S:x /B:y /T:z    (+ ENTER)
  394.  
  395. For the values of x, y, z refer to the following table:
  396.  
  397.     S = Spatializer level:  0=Off, 1=Low, 2=Medium, 3=High
  398.     B = Bass level: 0 through 7 (0=lowest, 7=highest)
  399.     T = Treble level:       0 through 7 (0=lowest, 7=highest)

  403. 3-2     Installation under Windows 3.1

  406. 3-2.1   Driver Installation
  407.  
  408. In order to set up your sound card to work under Windows 3.1x and DOS, 
  409. please follow the guidelines below:
  410.  
  411. 1. Start up Windows
  412.  
  413. 2. After start up, choose in the File menu of Program Manager the option Run... .
  414.  
  415. 3. Insert the  installation disk into your floppy disk drive and type on the 
  416.    command line the following:
  417.  
  418.     A:\WIN31DRV\SETUP
  419.     (assuming your floppy disk drive is the A: drive)
  420.  
  421. 4. Click the OK button.
  422.  
  423. The sound card setup program will now start.
  424.  
  425. Make sure all other applications are closed before you start SETUP.
  426.  
  427. After a few seconds the above window should pop up on your screen (or 
  428. similar). Click on Continue or press enter to enter the setup program.
  429. The setup program can also be used to uninstall the drivers after they have 
  430. been installed before. Since the drivers have not been installed yet, this 
  431. option is not available at this stage. This option can be convenient when 
  432. installing a new sound card or when anything goes wrong during initial 
  433. installation and you would like to go through the whole installation 
  434. procedure again.
  435.  
  436. Click on Driver Installation or press enter to continue.
  437.  
  438. During installation of the driver software, your  sound card should be 
  439. installed into your PC system. If the sound card has not been installed or 
  440. is not recognised by the software, the following message will show up on 
  441. your screen.
  442.  
  443. If this message comes up, press OK, exit Windows, turn off your system 
  444. and check if your sound card has been installed correctly. If your sound 
  445. card has been installed correctly and the setup program still comes up with 
  446. this error message then don't hesitate to contact your supplier for technical 
  447. assistance.
  448.  
  449. If your sound card has been installed correctly, the following configuration 
  450. setting selection window should be shown.Though this whole installation 
  451. procedure works under Windows, this part of the configuration is applicable 
  452. only to the DOS settings. Windows settings will be automatically installed. 
  453. Enable the IDE CD-ROM interface settings only when your PC system does not 
  454. provide a free IDE port for your CD-ROM and you therefore want to use the 
  455. sound card's IDE interface.
  456.  
  457. These IDE CD-ROM settings are applicable only to drives connected to 
  458. the sound card's IDE port!
  459.  
  460. Please refer to Addendum B for more detailed information on the use of your 
  461. card's IDE.
  462.  
  463. If you encounter any problems during the installation of your CD-ROM 
  464. drive while using your sound card's CD-ROM interface, try using different 
  465. installation values (IRQ, I/O address) first before contacting your supplier 
  466. for technical support.
  467.  
  468. After clicking on the OK button, the software will make the necessary 
  469. changes to your system and install the correct drivers for use under 
  470. Windows and DOS.
  471.  
  472. The driver software has now been installed. Click on Reboot System or press 
  473. enter to restart your system. After restart your sound card will be initialised 
  474. and is ready for use. If you encounter any problems or irregularities during 
  475. the startup and/or use of your  sound card, please check all connections of 
  476. your speaker, amplifier and restart your system. (refer to Addendum A 
  477. Troubleshooting if necessary)

  481. 3-2.2   AudioRack Installation
  482.  
  483. For installation of the (optional) AudioRack software, enter the disk into 
  484. your floppy drive and start up Windows.
  485.  
  486. After start up, choose in the File menu of Program Manager the option Run... 
  487. and type on the command line the following:
  488.  
  489.     A:\AUDRACK.W31\SETUP
  490.     (assuming your floppy disk drive is the A: drive)
  491.  
  492. Click the OK button or press enter. The AudioRack setup program will now 
  493. start. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  494.  
  495. Please note that settings in the mixer part of the AudioRack will affect your 
  496. sound card's output, even when used under DOS !
  497.

  499. 3-2.3   Windows 3.1x 3D Sound Settings
  500.  
  501. If your sound card is equipped with a 3D sound effect generator, you can 
  502. enable this function by running the 3D utility program 3DWIN.EXE. If you 
  503. are running Windows, click on the MS-DOS Prompt icon and insert the disk 
  504. that contains the 3D utilities for your  sound card into your floppy disk 
  505. drive. Then type the following on the command line:
  506.  
  507.     COPY A:\3D\3DWIN31.EXE C:\AUDIODRV      (+ ENTER)
  508.     COPY A:\3D\ESSCTL.DLL C:\AUDIODRV       (+ ENTER)
  509.     EXIT    (+ ENTER)
  510.  
  511. Now you are back in Windows. In Program Manager click on File and then 
  512. New. Then press enter to confirm the creation of a new file item. In the 
  513. Program Item Properties window click on Browse...  Then select the file 
  514. 3DWIN31.EXE in the C:\AUDIODRV directory and press enter or click on 
  515. OK. Back in the Program Item Properties window click on OK again.
  516.  
  517. A new icon will be added to your current Program Manager group. Activate 
  518. the 3D utility by clicking on the icon. The following window (or similar) 
  519. will appear:
  520.  
  521. Now you can manipulate the 3D settings using your mouse pointer.

  525. 3-3     Installation under Windows 95

  530. Under Windows 95 it is possible to install your  sound card according to 
  531. the Plug and Play method as described in the Windows 95 manual.  Please 
  532. refer to the Windows 95 manual for more detailed information on Plug and 
  533. Play devices.
  534.  
  535. After installation of your sound card, Windows 95 will automatically 
  536. recognise the new card and ask for the Windows 95 compatible driver files 
  537. for the  card. When Windows 95 asks for these files, insert the  disk that 
  538. contains these files and select the correct path by clicking on Browse and 
  539. then searching the right path (A:\WIN95DRV).
  540.  
  541. When installing a sound card under Windows 95 for the first time, 
  542. Windows 95 will need to copy some files from the Windows 95 installation 
  543. disk, so make sure you have these at hand during installation !
  544.  
  545. Follow the instructions on the screen. After installing the correct driver 
  546. files, you can immediately start to use your sound card.
  547.  
  548. If you would like to use the wavetable (if available) for playing MIDI files, 
  549. don't forget to change the standard settings in the Windows 95 Control 
  550. Panel. Default settings will use the FM synthesizer for playing MIDI files.

  553. 3-3.2   AudioRack for Windows 95 Installation
  554.  
  555. For the installation of the (optional) AudioRack for Windows 95, please 
  556. insert the AudioRack installation disk into your floppy disk drive, click on 
  557. START and choose Run... and type on the command line the following:

  559.     A:\AUDRACK.W95\SETUP
  560.     (assuming your floppy disk drive is the A: drive)
  561.  
  562. Click the OK button or press enter. The AudioRack setup program will now 
  563. start. Follow the instructions on the screen.

  567. 3-3.3   Windows 95 3D Sound Settings
  568.  
  569. If your sound card is equipped with a 3D sound effect, you can enable this 
  570. function by running the 3D utility program 3DWIN95.EXE. If you are running 
  571. Windows 95, click on the MS-DOS Prompt icon and insert the disk that 
  572. contains the 3D utilities for your  sound card into your floppy disk drive. 
  573. Then type the following on the command line:
  574.  
  575.     COPY A:\3D\3DWIN95.EXE C:\AUDIODRV      (+ ENTER)
  576.     COPY A:\3D\ESSCTL32.DLL C:\AUDIODRV     (+ ENTER)
  577.     EXIT    (+ ENTER)

  579. Now you are back in Windows 95. In order to create a shortcut to the 3D 
  580. utility press the right mouse button (secondary button) and choose the 
  581. creation of a shortcut. Then browse to the file 3DWIN95.EXE in the 
  582. C:\AUDIODRV directory and confirm the selection by pressing enter.
  583.  
  584. A new icon will be added to your desktop. Activate the 3D utility by 
  585. clicking on the icon. The following window (or similar) will appear:

  587. Now you can manipulate the 3D settings using your mouse pointer.

  788. port and a secondary port. Each IDE port can connect to a master IDE 
  789. device and a slave IDE device. In total such systems can thus connect to

  791. the one on your  sound card.The secondary IDE port on these systems usually 
  792. uses IRQ channel 15. In order to avoid conflicts with these devices, your
